Danny O’Neil threw 32 touchdowns and ran another 9 in the 2022 season.

Irish quarterback and junior Danny O’Neil has already accumulated nearly every passing record in Cathedral football history in his two full seasons as the starter. In only 29 games, O’Neil has racked up over 6000 total yards and 86 total touchdowns, all while throwing just nine career interceptions. He holds the record for all-time passing yards, passing completions and passing touchdowns—and he still has one more year left to pad those stats.

O’Neil has been on the radar of college scouts since before he even started a game for the Irish. He received his first Division 1 scholarship offer in June before his sophomore year, from the University of Toledo, and from there the offers kept flowing in. O’Neil was rated a three star recruit by 247 Sports and was named a top 30 quarterback in the nation for the class of 2024.

O’Neil took visits to a few Power 5 schools including Purdue, Indiana, Penn State, Wake Forest and Colorado. 247 Sports had him projected to choose Kentucky, where he would become teammates with senior Kendrick Gilbert. However, after O’Neil’s recent second visit to Boulder, Colorado, he was quick to finalize his decision and choose the Buffaloes.

O’Neil will join a stacked quarterback room in Boulder that could include Shedeur Sanders, a current sophomore and the son of head coach and NFL legend Deion Sanders. Sanders and the other quarterbacks will be mentors to O’Neil as he works his way up the depth chart as an underclassman. He is the fifth 2024 recruit to commit to Colorado, a program that finished 1-11 last season but is expected to be very competitive for years to come with Deion Sanders as the head coach.
