The Latino Student Union (LSU) is hosting the Dia de los Muertos dance this Saturday, October 15, from 6 pm to 9 pm. A $5 dollar entrance fee will be collected to support the LSU. The event will feature some cultural dances and showcase the LSU’s performance for the upcoming multicultural assembly. Snacks and drinks will be provided as well.

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Hispanic holiday that traditionally takes place on November 1 and 2. This two-day event is celebrated by most Spanish-speaking countries and is dedicated to remembering and celebrating the lives of the deceased, especially family members.

Dia de los Muertos was chosen as the theme for this event because the holiday is approaching and October 15 marks the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Spanish teacher Mrs. Karla Diuro is one of the educators who has been involved in planning this event for the past few months, along with LSU member senior Giovanni Saavedra-Rios and Vice President for community relations and diversity Mr. Ken Barlow ‘82. She encourages everyone who has an interest in Hispanic culture to attend.

Mrs. Diuro said, “It’s important to learn more about other people’s cultures and learn about the diversity we have within Cathedral. We want to make sure that everyone knows that (the event) isn’t just for LSU students. Part of our mission is to be inclusive of all allies and everyone who wants to know more about our culture. You don’t have to necessarily be of Hispanic or Latino descent (to attend).”
