SRO Dominique Smith

What brought you to Cathedral?

Smith: My mom worked with the nurse at a different school and the nurse knew I was a police officer and told me to apply here.

Where were you before this?

Smith: I started as a police officer in 2019 and worked until I had my daughter. I missed law enforcement so I came back to Cicero.

What is your favorite aspect of Cathedral?

Smith: The kids, the relationship I’ve been able to build with the students eating lunch with them and getting to know them.

How does this compare to being in the field?

Smith: It doesn’t, SRO is much different than on the road, on the road people don’t wanna smile and talk to you and then here the kids don’t want to leave you alone.

What is a crazy thing that has happened to you during a shift?

Smith: One time I went to make a traffic stop in the dark on 116th by the target. It was the winter, and I got out of my car to make a passenger side approach and slipped on the ice with my camera going… out of embarrassment I got back in my car and drove away.

When did you know this is what you wanted to do?

Smith: I always knew as a little kid. I never wanted to be a firefighter, always a cop.

What is a good destresser for you?

Smith: Going to the gym, spending time with my family and the farm animals.

What role does music play in your life?

Smith: None really, I just listen to it. I listen to mainly country and Christian, and occasionally rap when I workout, I’ll jam to 21 savage.

Who was your top listened to artist of 2023?

Smith: Morgan Wallen, Last Night was my favorite song.

What is your top travel destination?

Smith: I love the mountains. I went to glacier national park on my honeymoon.

What is the ugliest car?

Smith: The Beatle, it looks like a bug… disgusting.

Favorite farm animal?

Smith: Chicken, they’re underestimated in being friends and pets.

Is there anything from high school you wish you’d participated in?

Smith: Sports, I wished I’d done volleyball. I went to a tryout and walked out. I wish I had stayed and tried out.

What is the craziest weird fact about you?

Smith: I was a show choir kid. And I was a leader in the show choir.

What is the most valuable character trait?

Smith: Loving, it’s talked about the most in the Bible.

What are your thoughts on leaving cathedral?

Smith: I am going to miss the relationships I had with the students but I’m excited to get back on patrol.

Will you be able to better help the community from your next position?

Smith: Yes, I can affect truly troubled people.

Estimate total number of arrests?

Smith: At least like 50…

Favorite staff here?

Smith: My mom, because she’s my mom

Favorite student…?

Smith: Paisley… she’s in Irish blessings. She’s a curly headed little cutie.
