 What about wrestling interests you? 

Reyes: The constant grind and determination you have to have.

 

When did you start wrestling?

Reyes: 2nd grade.

 

Did the success of Cathedral’s wrestling program play a factor in your decision to attend Cathedral?

Reyes: Not much, my older brother attended here.

 

What weight class do you wrestle?

Reyes: 132.

 

Do you have to take special steps to maintain your weight?

Reyes: Calorie deficit, sauna, watching what I eat.

 

Do you play any other sports?

Reyes: Football.

 

What is it about wrestling that you like?

Reyes: The brotherhood with the swamp and it makes me a better person.

 

What is the most challenging thing about wrestling?

Reyes: Constantly moving and fighting for takedowns.

 

What is the typical training schedule during the season?

Reyes: Monday thru Saturday 2 hours, Sunday private lessons.

 

How do you mentally prepare for your matches?

Reyes: Drilling hard at practice and watching film on your opponent.

 

Even though wrestlers compete individually, how do the athletes support and motivate one another?

Reyes: Having a good drill partner is crucial, you need someone to push you everyday and get you better.

 

Do you feel like there is a sense of camaraderie and teamwork on the wrestling team?

Reyes: 100 percent, even though it’s an individual sport we cheer for each other and work hard together to be a winning team.

 

What opportunities exist for wrestlers to compete outside of regular season matches (tournaments, off-season training, etc.)?

Reyes: Freestyle tournaments, CIA wrestling club, Outlaws, Fighting Irish club, private lessons.

 

How do you measure success beyond wins and losses?

Reyes: Mentally whether winning or losing, are you looking to get another takedown or escape?

 

What has been your most memorable wrestling match?

Reyes: My last match of last season, it shows how much I got better over that year.

 

What are your personal goals for this season? 

Reyes: Make it to state.

 

What are the goals for the team this season?

Reyes: Finish top 5.

 

How many wrestlers are coming back this season?

Reyes: I believe we have 7 returning starters.

 

Would you like to wrestle in college?

Reyes: No, I would like to focus on school after high school.

 

What have you learned from wrestling that will help you be successful in other aspects of your life?

Reyes: Wrestling has made me mentally tough. It helps me when there is an obstacle in the way and I will always find a way to get around it.
