The men’s and women’s varsity soccer teams, both of which won City titles on Sept. 27, now move on to Sectional play.

The men’s team, which will compete in the Class 3A tournament, will take on Warren Central in the Sectional opener at Arsenal Technical on Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. If Head Coach Mr. Whitey Kapsalis’s team beats Warren, it will play in the Sectional semifinal on Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m., taking on the winner of the Arsenal Tech vs. Lawrence Central match.

“We feel like we are hitting our stride as a team, and we like our momentum as we head into the State tournament,” Kapsalis wrote in an email on Sept. 27.

The women’s team, which is ranked second in Class 2A and will compete in that class, drew a first-round bye and will play Herron at Bishop Chatard on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. Should Head Coach Mr. Marc Behringer’s ’84 squad win its opener, the Irish will play in the Sectional championship on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.

In an email, Behringer noted the possibility of the Sectional championship match being a repeat of the City title match, which the Irish won 3-3 (4-2 on penalty kicks). In the City final, Chatard led 2-0 with 13 minutes left, but Behringer’s squad scored with seven seconds remaining to force overtime.

Behringer noted that junior and goalkeeper Sophia Saucerman saved two Chatard penalty kicks.

“Imagine,” Behringer said, “The same two teams on the same field playing for the Sectional championship. Don’t miss it.”
