Flyers can be seen in the girls restrooms across campus promoting Girl Up.

For Valentine’s day, Cathedral’s own Girl Up club was hard at work decorating the girls bathrooms with valentines, candy, and positive affirmations.

Girl Up is run by junior, Joan Darnell and Moderator, Mrs. Bradshaw, with help from senior Sally Bradshaw. Girl Up previously met weekly to discuss varying topics or to have open discussions between each other, sharing their experiences. However, they now meet monthly in order to make their plans a reality.

Girl Up gets the majority of their money from Shamrauction. However, they also receive money through direct donations and some other minor fundraisers. From this fundraiser and others, they are able to have a couple events per semester.

President of Girl Up,  junior Joan Darnell said, “Last semester was kind of slow, just because we were getting back on our feet, but we still have a couple more plans for this semester.”

Girl Up is in the planning process of future events, like International Women’s Day and Denim Day in April. For International Women’s Day, Girl Up will write inspirational and empowering messages on mirrors in the girls bathrooms. For Denim Day, Girl Up will work alongside the Empowering Healthy Minds club to raise awareness for sexual assault.

“Girl up is for anybody who is willing to have an open mind. A lot of people think that guys can’t join because they aren’t girls, but if you’re willing to have an open mind, and understand how our experiences are different from theirs, you’re welcome to come,” said Darnell.
