The Cathedral High School Varsity Softball team is heading into this 2026 season off of a state championship. This championship isn’t just a championship but a piece of history as this was the first state title ever won by Cathedral softball.
In the 2025 season, the Cathedral high school softball team won the state title. This championship was history in the making for Cathedral high school. Class of 2025’s Anna Moore, Angie Valentine, Ella Muzechuk, and Maddie Liter made it their duty to win the state title while they still could. The returning seniors are now making it their priority to win the state title, one of these seniors is Sidney Fezsco.
Sidney Fezsco said, “Now when we’re at practice doing the small things —extra reps, conditioning, the training nobody sees— we remember exactly why it matters. Having that championship on our backs doesn’t add pressure, it just reminds us of the standard we’ve set and how hungry we still are.”
The softball team is making it this season’s priority to win a second state title, wanting to make history again for the softball team. The team is going into practices with the title on their mind to remind them what they are working towards for this season.
They had the best season with the most wins ever recorded for Cathedral softball. This doesn’t affect the team though because they are keeping positive and their minds clear of worry and doubt. Although there isn’t any pressure on the team, this is the last year for seniors, and it is their goal to make a championship their end goal. Not only is a championship the goal for seniors but the entire time, including junior Sydney Matthews.
Matthews said, “I would say now we know we have a target on our backs so we are preparing for everyone to really want to beat us. Also we are aware our team dynamic is going to look different after losing a strong senior class, so we are focusing on preparing new people to step into different roles. But I also think we are going to be super excited and motivated since we know what it feels like to win a state championship. We are going to do everything we can to get back there again!”
