April brings the full blossoming of spring, the month of growing, and what story about growth is better than that of the growth of the heart.

You may be thinking I’m talking about “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” but no. I refer to a movie that has made every single viewer cry at least once, and one of the many reasons people (including myself) wanted to go see “Ready Player One.”

I am, of course, talking about Vin Diesel’s first portrayal as a friendly giant BG (Before Groot), “The Iron Giant.”

With its recent release onto Netflix, and a very heartbreaking conversation with an entire room full of people my age would had never seen it, I have made it my mission to help those in need of beauty in their life. So, for those sinners who are my age and have never seen this fine example of a childhood film, here is why you need not to grow up, but go back in time and right the wrong you have done.

“The Iron Giant” is a typical story of a kid who finds a so-called “monster” and befriends it. The main character, Hogarth Hughes (yes, that’s his name), teaches the Giant how to become more human and important life lessons. The setting is in the ‘50s, so paranoia from evidence of a giant creature takes over the town, and the classic 1950s government detective, Kent Mansley, is there to ruin everything.

The 2D animation still holds and stacks up to today’s effecs, but the main reason you should see this movie is the story told and lessons learned.

The famous line “you are what you choose to be” is the most remembered of the movie, followed by the Giant’s response, but you’ll just have to go see it to find out for yourself. Chances are it will make any viewer cry.

It had been years since I had seen it, and while watching it for the first of many rewatches, I remembered all of it; and yes, the ending made me cry just as it always does. If you are one of those who need to right the wrong that is not seeing this beautiful story, or if you are just someone who wants to relive a moment in your childhood, remember that you are who you choose to be, and I suggest you choose to be someone who has scene this masterpiece of a film.
