Several award-winning Cathedral musicians will compete at the Indiana State School Music Association instrumental state solo and ensemble contest on March 3 at North Central High School.

They include seniors Kienan Corcoran, trombone solo; Holly Czachura, french horn solo; Miranda Ma, clarinet solo; Liam Moore, clarinet solo; Kyle Nickolson, trombone solo; Carly Roth, flute trio; Greyson Turner, tuba solo and Constanza Widel, flute trio; juniors Nandi Hawkin, snare drum solo; Anna Pohl, flute solo, flute trio; Dominic Quadrini, snare drum solo; sophomore Claudia Darnell, flute solo; and freshmen Ana Lim, violin solo; Jacob Lo, violin solo; Gabriel Tice, alto saxophone solo.

Nearly every Cathedral musician received a gold rating, many coming very near to a perfect score, with Lo receiving the lone perfect score of 9. In Indiana, the two highest awards an individual can receive in band are a gold rating at ISSMA state solo and ensemble contest and membership in the Indiana All-State Band (which Turner is). These students have hit the top of Indiana individual instrumental achievement, according to Mrs. Kathy McCullough, director of bands.

In an email, McCullough wrote, “This was one of the best days we have ever had at this contest. I am so proud of them — if you could have sat in one of the rooms (on Feb. 24) and heard them play, you would have been awestruck.”
