After a hot start to the season in week one when the Irish beat top ranked Ben Davis 24-6, expectations had grown for this young, yet confident Irish football team.
Senior Running Back Jalen Bonds was one of those players who got off to a hot start last week, finishing with 162 yards on 24 carries, but his encore was not as impactful. Early in the first half, Bonds suffered a high ankle sprain, sidelining him for the rest of the game.
Without Bonds, the Irish struggled. Falling behind 17-0 by the midpoint of the second quarter.
“I think our loss was due to us not facing adversity as well as we could have,” senior Tight End Alston McDaniel said, “we are going to focus on being better as one team, and working as one unit, one week at a time.”
The Irish were able to secure a touchdown via junior Wide Receiver Jackson Harvey, but then mother nature intervened.
Lightning was spotted in the distance, sending everyone to the locker room, and all the fans back to their cars. After a bit of a delay, it was announced that the game would resume at 12:30, the following afternoon.
The Irish were optimistic because of their recent momentum going into the 16 hour delay in the game, but there was still plenty of work to be done.
When restarting the game Saturday afternoon, Brownsburg immediately drove down and scored a touchdown, making the score 24-7.
The Irish were able to respond with a long drive of their own, capped off by a one yard sneak by junior Quarterback, Cameron Koers. 24-14. Six minutes left in the 4th quarter.
Brownsburg regained possession, drove down again, and put six more on the board to make it 30-14. Although they missed the extra point, a two score game with 3 minutes on the clock was a tall task for the Irish. It proved to be too tough of a challenge.
“We were disappointed (with the loss) obviously,” McDaniel said, “but the team as a whole is feeling optimistic and we are taking this as a learning opportunity and an opportunity to be better next week.”
The Irish play next week at St. Xavier (Cincinnati) next Friday, September 6th.
