As we near the end of the year, many exciting events seem to quickly creep our way. The one and only, greatly esteemed, Irish 500 is one of the most awaited events of the school year, showcasing, in my opinion, the best school spirit. However, many students don’t know about the work that goes into creating the track, decorating The Hill, and gathering all the supplies to create one of the best events of the year. Students have the student council (stuco) to thank for this. 

Student Council, a group of student leaders elected by their peers, meets at least once a week to discuss upcoming events. Student council moderators Kim Jamell, Ed Freije, and Matt Cannaday oversee meetings and preparations.

Students have the opportunity to create ideas for spirit week, coming up with themes for each day, and also are in charge of organizing the canned food drive. Student council members also plan and organize Homecoming, Winterfest, the Talent Show, and of course, the Irish 500.

Being elected to be a part of the student council secures your position for the rest of your 4 years in high school at Cathedral. Student council allows students to foster skills like leadership, communication, teamwork, organization, and public speaking which are key factors you need in your everyday life.

In addition to planning events that contribute to school spirit, the student council is the voice of the student body, carrying their ideas and implicating them into life at Cathedral. Jamell says, “If you enjoy the events that take place throughout the school year and have interest in organizing them or just helping, student council would be a great fit for you.” 

To be accepted into the student council, students must complete an application. They are to be printed and turned in to Mrs. Jamell by Thursday, March 28 by 3:20. To campaign for yourself, persuading your peers to vote for you, you can create flyers and posters to put around the school, but first must have them approved by Mr. Freije. Any other campaign material must also be approved by Mr. Freije. 

If you aren’t running, make sure you are on the lookout for the voting form that will be sent out in the coming week, and good luck to any student who is planning on running for student council.
