Roch Egan – Prom Dress Brings Dumb Stress

Let’s start off with some quick math. It has come to my attention that Prom dressers are being compared to wedding dresses, which take many months to shop for. The average wedding dress costs around $3,000, and the average time between engagement and wedding is 12 months, this means that a bride would spend one month searching, for every $250 that the dress is. On the contrary, a proms dress has an average price of $300. So… one month of searching. NOT FOUR!!!

My apologies for the lesson, but my point stands, a minor decision such as this one, for a garment of clothing that will be worn for a grand total of 4 hours, does not need months of contemplation. I think the proper amount of time for a prom dress decision should be no more than a month. 

Prom professional and three time prom-goer Ms. Irene Wilson said “Prom dresses should be a post spring break decision.” Wilson rented her prom dress for Senior prom for a total of $50 for the one night. In addition, the stresses of prom dress purchases should not be something glooming over your head while on Spring Break.

I believe that prom dresses should not be played up this much. Nobody should be judged on what their dress looks like, or how much was spent on it. Dresses should be a purchase that is nice for the occasion but also something that you can get more use than just one night. If you plan on buying a dress for hundreds of dollars and going to only wear it once, then why not get a dress for a third of the price that can be worn multiple times. Or better yet, rent!

All in all, prom dresses do not need to be another source of stress in this already stressful world. And please, feel free to reach out to me for my professional opinion on this matter, and I will try them on if that’s what it takes. So be patient, and wait for the proper time to shop for your dress.

Avery Stuckey – You’re Already Late to the Prom Game

Prom. Probably one of the most anticipated nights in high schoolers lives. However, what is prom without the dresses? It is one of the first things that comes to my mind when I think of this night.   

Although Cathedral’s Prom is not until April 20, if you listen closely you can hear girls asking one another if they’ve gotten their dress. As well as many students that have already started to send in their dresses to Instagram (@cathedralpromdresses ). if you haven’t started yet, you are already late to the game. 

Honestly, it is never too early to figure out what dress you are going to wear. I think for many girls, thinking starts at a very young age. For me at least, I feel like I always saw these movies where the characters were going to Prom. Ever since then I feel like it was always something I looked forward to seeing pictures of and had ideas of what dress I would want.  

You know what they always say- early bird gets the worm. This especially applies to prom dresses because there are only a certain amount of colors and styles in a reasonable price range. Speaking of the cost, the earlier you shop, the more affordable dresses may be because it is not yet “prom season” and they have not marked up the dresses yet…which for me would be a huge bonus!

Also, along with shopping early, you will have countless options as you are one of the firsts to pick off the rack and there are not a ton of people to squeeze around in a prom dress store this time of year. For senior Jade Slone she said, “It is less stressful because there are less people shopping early and there are more options”. 

Overall, why wait until the last minute to pick out your dress? You will be stressed cause you are on the clock having to pick from a limited selection, and the prices are through the roof for picked over dresses. Especially when you can buy it a couple months in advance and save yourself the panic. I have faith that you could still find the dress for you…but what if it needs to be altered! Oh well, better luck next year! Just whatever you do, don’t wait until after spring break to get your dress!
