Pink Panthers Head Coaches, William Neale and Danny O’Neil, stand confident as they coach their teams during a Powder Puff practice

This Friday, September 8th, marks one of Cathedrals most fun traditions, Powderpuff. A take on flag football where girls from the senior class are split into 2 teams and coached by the captains of the football team. The Pink Panthers will go head to head against the Goon Squad during the activity period on the football field.

Coach Wright, powderpuff coordinator said “It is a way to see kids in a different element. The coaches and players really get into it and play their roles well.” The pink panthers are coached and led by the offensive captains of the football team and the Green Goons are led by the defensive captains. Coach Wright, continued by saying “Both sets of captains had good strategies when drafting their players and I think it will be a good game.”

Powder puff has been a Cathedral tradition for many years. When it was first started it had many teams from all grades, similar to boys intramural basketball that happens every year during winter fest. Through the years it has shifted into exclusively seniors and only in the last couple of years it turned into only two teams.

Emma Schnur, one of the Goon Squads wide receivers said “Since freshman year I have always loved watching the senior girls play during homecoming week. I always knew I wanted to play once I was a senior myself, and I am excited to show the underclassmen what the Goon Squad is made of.”

Both teams are very confident in their teams and strategies. Head Coach of the Goon Squad and middle linebacker on the football team, Oscar Kirch said “Our team is highly explosive. We have speed, strength, and most importantly, heart. The other team is going to need to brace themselves for what is about to come their way. We are coming for the win.”

On the opposite sidelines, Head coach of the Pink Panthers and quarterback of the football team, Danny O’Neil also stated his confidence in his team by saying “I anticipate the score will be a lot to a little, we have phenomenal players, absolute dawgs, and the only strategy we have is to win.”

It is evident that both teams are extremely eager for the game on Friday and especially excited to show the freshmen one of the best parts about Homecoming Week. Stay tuned for Friday’s match up where we will see which team comes out on top.
