From Grace Zuerner ‘27 becoming a finalist in DECA’s International Career Development Conference to the Boys Basketball Team winning the Class 3A State Championship, the 2026 to 2027 school year has been a major success for Cathedral High School along with its students and staff. Fortunately, the wins have not stopped yet.
Cathedral’s very own Matthew Roth ‘29 and Violet Fortner ‘29 collaborated with a few former classmates at Sycamore School to assemble a winning team, making its way through regionals, state and to the grand stage in St. Louis, Missouri. A lot of hard work went into these competitions, and the team flourished when it mattered most.

At the World Championship, students completed an interview to explain their design process and present a notebook, which outlines their design process and problem solving skills. Finally, they competed in a competition against another team, where they scored points by accomplishing the game’s objectives. In addition to winning the Judge’s Award at the World Championship, the team also won the Amaze Award at Indiana’s State Championship.
Matthew and Violet both have a strong STEM background, coming to Cathedral from Sycamore School, a top-rated private school with a curriculum designed for gifted students. They are both students in quite a few dual credit classes and have maintained a High Honor Roll status. In the upcoming school year, they’re both excited to join Cathedral’s Robotics Team.
Through this experience, Roth has learned the importance of teamwork and doing what you enjoy and find pleasure in. He said, “You never do anything alone. The big thing is to always trust in God. You might not necessarily be called to be the smartest ever. You might not be called to be the best athlete ever. You might not be called to do robotics. Do what you are called to do and there’s generally others that are called there too.”
