The Irish have five games remaining before the playoffs begin and are determined to win out heading into postseason play. Cathedral has been solid so far this season with a record of 14-8-1 and is looking to make an even bigger impact as the playoffs approach and a hopeful run to the state title, the first one since the 2017 team 9 years ago.
The five-game stretch begins against Carmel and finishes May 28 against Indianapolis Shortridge. The Irish hope to build momentum and carry it into what they believe can be a deep playoff run in Class 3A. Once the team gets going, they believe they can compete with anyone in the state. “We are one of the hottest teams in 3A,” said varsity outfielder/infielder Callum Birdzell.
However, the team knows there are still areas they need to improve before the postseason begins. “We definitely have some things we need to clean up and practice,” coach Quinn said. “We need to focus on our execution, our bunt defenses, and our pickoff plays. We also need to make sure we’re in the right mindset to compete while staying physically healthy because we’ve had some injuries pop up over the last couple of weeks.”
If the Irish can win all five games, they will head into the playoffs with plenty of confidence and momentum. After falling to Guerin Catholic in last year’s regional round, Cathedral is motivated to make a stronger push this postseason and prove they belong among the top teams in 3A. With momentum building at the right time and a focus on improving the small details, the Cathedral Irish are hoping their final stretch of the regular season is only the beginning of a memorable playoff run to a huge state title.
