With March only two days away, the kickoff for Next Level Flag Football is quickly approaching. This new league is available to kids in kindergarten through seventh grade hosting co-ed flag football matches. This league will be hosted right on Cathedral’s campus, giving local families an opportunity to have a nearby successful league to involve their kids in.
One of Cathedral football’s assistant coaches and Special Teams Coordinator, Kurt Freytag said, “It also gives families a fun, low-barrier way to experience Cathedral’s people, energy, and culture in a positive environment.”
Hosting this co-ed league is a created opportunity for a high-energy, positive experience for young athletes. This league is intended to be structured neatly, and it will be kid friendly. This league is designed to have consistent practices followed up with a game. This consistent schedule allows for a steady flow, and it keeps the kids learning.
Kids who signed up for the co-ed league will be given the opportunity to learn and be coached by Cathedral student-athletes, gaining both new skills and confidence. This involvement from both kids and athletes bring new benefits: better learning, role models and a more positive environment. Younger players getting coached by older athletes boosts effort and confidence as they naturally look up to them as leaders, students, and coaches.
Freytag said, “This new league isn’t just good for the young players—Cathedral students grow as leaders by teaching the game the right way.” By hosting this league, athletes fulfill the role of community and leadership beyond the classrooms. This allows for Cathedral to become a gathering area for families to experience their own children making new connections and memories while building new relationships within Cathedral’s campus.
Freytag said, “It’s the kind of thing that creates real connection, familiar faces every weekend, shared memories, and a stronger tie between Cathedral and North Indy families.”
Games in this league will primarily be on Sundays and this schedule will be built to allow each grade block to have practice time which will then be followed up with game time. A typical Sunday will consist of K/1st + 2nd beginning their practice block at 11:00am, and starting their game at noon. Then is 3rd + 4th grade beginning their practice block at noon and playing at 1:00pm. Lastly is the 5th + 6th/7th team beginning practice at noon and then playing their game at 1:00pm.
