Senior Susannah Ferris was named Student of the Month for November. The Holy Cross Value of November was Option for the Poor.
Ferris is a greatly involved student on the Hill; she is an active member of many clubs and organizations that serve her interests and talents. Ferris participates in the school theatre, also known as CaTheatre, Cathedral’s band, the Jazz band, American Sign Language Club, Empowering Healthy Minds Club, and Cathedral Jamz.
Ferris believes that surrounding herself in such musical activities fits her passion and attachment for music. Of all these outside classroom activities, Ferris is an accomplished and attentive student. She works hard and passionately to work on team building skills in the classroom setting.
Ferris said, “I have a tendency to want to work independently on tasks, but I’ve recognized that hearing and understanding another person’s perspective ultimately makes me a better person in the classroom, in musicianship, and in a normal social setting.”
As a Chrisitan, Ferris believes that the Holy Cross Value of Option for the Poor, along with the call to action it leads us to advocate for, is a perfect example of the importance of community in Christianity. To Ferris, this value calls her to become a greater advocate each and every day of her life.
One of the ways that Ferris lives out this value of Option for the Poor in her day-to-day life is through her musical talents. Ferris’ love and passion for the musical arts is a big part of her own life, as she believes that her music taste inspires her. Ferris said, “I love to think, speak, breathe, and live in music, which I hope to inspire others to feel the same way.”
Ferris is a big and proud advocate for social justice. The phrase, “Become the change you wish to see in the world” is one that particularly resonates as she reflects on the Holy Cross Value of Option for the Poor.
The words spoken through Ferris and her morals are ones that are carved by her support towards solving hatred and dividedness in her communities and in the country. These words and morals of Ferris are an enactment of the vulnerable act of love that she believes Christians are called to.
Ferris said, “Christians are called to model the example of unconditional love Christ gives to us; we are asked to show love to our neighbors, no matter who we are, where we come from, and what we have to offer.”
