Even though it is cold out and soon the ground will be covered in snow, the Cathedral Irish Boys Golf team is looking forward to getting back on the course to play the game they love. While golf is an individual sport, the support of your teammates is critical and with three returning Varsity players this year’s team is set up for success. A positive attitude plays a key role in the player’s performance and this group of guys have a great outlook. They support each other and celebrate each other’s successes.
Senior Drew Adams, one of the returning Varsity players from last year, is really excited to get the season started. “I’ve been golfing since I have been old enough to remember. I remember my dad taking to the course on weekends to just mess around and hit balls. I really started to love playing golf right before high school and began to take it more seriously after that.”
Golf is a funny sport, no matter how long you have played, there are good days and bad days on the course and keeping a good attitude is key. Consistency comes with practice and Adams makes the commitment to his game during the off season. “I love golf and try to get in as many rounds as possible. Additionally, I take lessons and compete in tournaments during the summer.”
Adams’ personal goals for the season is to always get better. “My goal every single year has always been to improve from the previous year and also throughout the season. This year specifically I want to hold a stroke average below 75 for the season. I want to give the team my best performance every match or tournament. I would also love to have a great day at my home course during the Highland Invitational.” Additionally, Drew takes his role as a senior leader on the team to heart. “I want to be a leader for the team. I remember previous seniors that had done the same thing for me and I want to be that person.”
As a senior leader for the team, Adams reiterates the importance of camaraderie and unity on the team. “We have a great group of players who really like each other and that makes it fun.” If the guys are having fun that should translate to a better performance.
“Last year we fell just short of advancing past the regional tournament but this year as a team our goal is to advance to the state finals. Additionally, we also want to represent Cathedral Golf as best as possible every single week by displaying the best sportsmanship and character at all times.”
