Mens’ Basketball

The boys’ basketball team opened their season last weekend with a win against Howe. Winning 76-70 in double overtime, Howe tested the Irish the moment they stepped onto the court. The boys have been working to adapt to a brand new coaching staff this season led by Head Coach Mr. Jason Delaney and are looking for Championships.

According to Delaney, the team’s goal is to win a Sectional championship. Out of all the varsity players, no one has won a City championship and the team wants to change that this season.

The team lost to number five ranked Fort Wayne North on Saturday. This loss did not phase Delaney, it made him look to the future. “With some correction we learned that we can compete with the best in the state,” said Delaney.

According to Delaney, the boys’ have been getting their opponents in foul trouble and getting to the basket. “We have not shot the ball well yet, which must carry over from practice,” said Delaney.

Delaney and his team are looking for their second win tonight against Warren Central at 7:30.

Wrestling

Head Coach Mr. Sean McGinley and his team have started their season strong. Last weekend, the team finished in 2nd place losing only to Avon. “If we had a couple close matches go our way I think we could’ve been real close to beating them. We wrestled well and whooped up on the defending state champs,” said senior Breyden Bailey.

The boys are ranked 4th in the power polls according to IHSAA. “Our goals are still to keep getting better in hopes that our kids peak at the right time and finish to their potential and ultimately win the team a State title,” said McGinley.

Following last weekend, four players remain undefeated: seniors Breyden Bailey and Ben Stewart, junior Zach Melloh and sophomore Lukasz Walendzak. According to McGinley, Bailey, Melloh, senior Alec Najem and Stewart have been working as leaders to set the example for the team.

“We have been getting better individually and will continue to work on our weaknesses,” said McGinley.

The boys travel to Calumet tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Swimming

Both the boys’ and girls’ swim teams finished first last Saturday scoring 85 points and 87 points respectively. According to Head Coach Ms. Katie Doron, the team has vastly improved in overall times and strength since the beginning of the season. Doron has been pushing the kids in practice with more yardage and in performance.

The team has faced an ongoing issue again this season and that is they lack a pool. The swimmers must rotate between IUPUI’s pool after school and the YMCA’s pool in the morning. “I have been challenging the kids and they are proving to be able to handle the harder workouts and the results show in the meets,” said Doron.

This year Doron and her team want to focus on both the boys’ and girls’ winning the City championship. “State is a goal for relays and some individuals, but as the team improves throughout the years and we keep building the team, it is possible to focus more on state in the future,” said Doron.

The team travels to Southport tomorrow to compete in their sixth meet of the year at 10 a.m.

Womens’ Basketball

The girls’ basketball team lost to Brownsburg last Friday night 47-37.

A month into the season, the Irish are 3-5. Led by Head Coach Mr. Ed Freije, the girls are gearing up for the City tournament, which kicks off after Christmas vacation.

Junior Keya Patton is currently averaging 22.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.

According to Freije, the team’s 55-42 win over Bishop Chatard was a big highlight thus far. “It’s important for this group to grow in its own identity, continue to push each other and continue to work to be great teammates and come together as a cohesive group,” said Freije.

With a team full of seniors, Freije and his assistants as well as underclass players want to build a legacy and something to be remembered by. “Each year we want to compete and give ourselves a chance to win every game,” said Freije. A banner on the wall would fulfill the legacy the girls are looking for.

The girls look to earn their fourth win tomorrow against Covenant Christian at 1:30 p.m.
