Next year’s football team will take on different opponents in the Class 5A Sectional, thanks to realignment by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association has reclassified the Class 5A football tournament, which now puts Head Coach Mr. Rick Streiff’s team in the same Sectional as Catholic school rival Roncalli.

Cathedral has competed in Class 6A the previous two seasons, compiling a record of 15 wins and 9 losses. The IHSAA tournament success factor bumped the team up two classes. Based solely on its enrollment of fewer than 1,100 students in grades 9 through 12, Cathedral would be assigned to Class 4A

The new Sectional playoff includes Arsenal Technical, Decatur Central, Plainfield and Roncalli high schools. The Fighting Irish have had previous success over Decatur Central in 2013, routing the Hawks by a score of 59-14. Last fall, the squad downed Tech 48-0.

Streiff wrote in a text message, “(This is a) great opportunity to play against some of Marion County’s finest.”
The 2017 season is set to begin with the Irish visiting Louisville (Kentucky) Saint Xavier on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m.
