Baseball

Season highlights: The team is 7-0-2 (as of April 16). Senior Chris Gallagher has been solid on the mound, going 4-0. Offensively, Gallagher is hitting .385 and has 15 stolen bases. Junior Kevin Collins is hitting .350 and senior Camden Jordan is hitting .300 with 16 stolen bases.

Key upcoming games: April 22 vs. Lawrence Central at Brunette Park at 5:30, April 23 at Brebeuf Jesuit at 7, April 29 at Lawrence North at 5:30, April 30 at Columbus North at 5:30 and May 1 at Franklin Community at 1.

Team goals: According to Head Coach Mr. Ed Freije ‘99, for the team to continue to compete at a high level and be the best version of Cathedral baseball that it can be. 

From Coach Freije: “We’ve had some interesting early games and are off to a good start. This group has worked hard and found ways to win games and fight throughout games. We need to continue to get better, grow together and sharpen things up.”

Men’s golf

Season highlights: Through April 12, the team had played two matches. The varsity was short handed in the first at Guerin Catholic but came back to play Zionsville within five strokes 159-164. The team beat Roncalli, which had a 189. The match was close and played on a tough Sagamore course in very windy conditions. Individually junior Ryan Ford has been medalist at the first two matches with a 34 and a 37.

Key upcoming matches: The Hall of Fame at Rock Hollow on May 1, State Preview at Prairie View on May 8 and Angola at Glendarin on May 15.

Team goals: Head Coach Mr. Pat Fagan said he is very proud of these players, as most have very little varsity experience. As a coach I’m really proud of these players. Most have had very little varsity experience.

From Coach Fagan: “As the season goes on, the team should continue to improve. We also have a bunch of sophomores and freshmen that are getting their first tastes of high school golf. It will be fun to see how they progress.”

Men’s track and field

Season highlights: Individual state rankings: Junior Charlie Schenck is ranked seventh in the state in pole vault, with senior Jake Langdon 10th in the 110 hurdles and junior Michael Page 11th in the 200 meters. The boys 4 x 800 relay team is ranked ninth and the 4 x 400 team is ranked 24th in the state. 

Key upcoming meets: April 29 Golden Bear Invite at 5 at Shelbyville, May 7 at 5:30 at Pike, May 12 at the City meet at 5 p.m. at Arsenal Tech. 

Team goals: To win City and advance as many athletes to State as possible.

Men’s volleyball

Season highlights: the team defeated Roncalli in three sets on April 10. Senior Aidan Broderick was named MaxPreps Midwest Player of the Week.

Key upcoming matches: The Metro tournament begins on April 20, with the Irish playing the winner of the Center Grove-Carmel match at 7 p.m. This bracket will advance to play the winner of the Roncalli bracket. 

Team goals: According to Head Coach Mr. Tyler McClure ‘08, the team seeks to win both the Metro and State tournaments. 

From Coach McClure: The team has made major improvements since the beginning of the year and I’m excited about the potential this team has. We have lost in five sets to the Number 1 and Number 2 teams in the state. The guys are working hard in practice to complete their goal of winning State. 

Women’s lacrosse 

Season highlights: As of April 15, the team is 3-4 for the season, with its most recent win against Noblesville. The team has put in a lot of work since the beginning of the season, and everything is starting to fall into place. The Irish have won all our games since spring break and are playing together as a team. Many players are offensive threats on the team, and the defensive unit is strong and challenges opposing teams. The team is better together and is successful because they play for each other and to build their teammates up.

 Key upcoming games: April 20 at Brebeuf Jesuit at 7, April 22 at Zionsville at 7:15, April 27 at home vs. Park Tutor at 7:30 (Senior Night), April 29 at Guerin Catholic at 7, May 4 at home vs. Carmel at 7, May 6 at home vs. Bishop Chatard.

Team goals: Head Coach Miss Mary Ann White ’11 wrote in an email: “We started the season with some tough teams and have put in the work to sharpen our fundamentals and play together as a team. We are at a pivotal point where our work is paying off. Our daily goal for the remainder of the season is to continue getting sharper, stronger, and better together every time we step on the field. Our long-term/measurable goal is to win our Sectional.

From Coach White: “I am very proud of how hard our team is working and how much improvement we have shown in the first half of the season. We have set the bar high for ourselves and shown that we deserve respect on the field. Every game this season will belong to the team that shows up and wants it the most. We have done that and will continue to do so. I believe in every player on my team, and I know they will continue to push themselves and each other to grow through the rest of the season.”

Softball

Season highlights: The team is 7-4 as of April 14, including a convincing 12-5 victory over perennial 4A power West Lafayette Harrison, a 7-2 victory over a strong pitching core from Speedway and an 11-1 victory over Lutheran. Senior Ava Amos is ranked 32nd in state with .739 on base percentage. Seniors Meghan McCarthy and Lia Burnell have combined to hit seven home runs on the season thus far. Pitcher and freshman Jade Slone has 45 strikeouts on the season thus far. Corinne Melloh, Julia Jennings, Amos, McCarthy, and Burnell are all hitting over .400

Key upcoming games: The Carmel Invitational takes place at the Carmel Cherry Tree Complex on April 23 and April 24 and will include a game against Lake Central at 7 p.m. on April 23 with April 24 games against Franklin Central at 9 a.m. and Penn at 11 a.m. The Senior Night recognition will take place on April 30 at Brunette Park at 5:30, and City tournament begins May 1 hosted at Irvington Little League.

From Assistant Coach Mrs. Linda Bamrick: “We are looking to keep improving on all facets of the game (hitting, defense, pitching and base running). We are gaining valuable experience against quality competition. After a slow start, we have won five games in a row. We are also looking to defend our City title and make a strong run in postseason play. Our focus has been on building confidence in ourselves and trust in our teammates. Our seniors have been doing a tremendous job in leading the way for our younger players.”

Women’s tennis

Key upcoming matches: April 20 at North Central, April 22 vs. Bishop Chatard, April 28 at home vs. Brebeuf Jesuit (Senior Night)

From Head Coach Mr. Mark Noe: “We have a whole new team compared to two years ago, with good players with great work ethic and a will to win. (Junior) Sara Wojtalik and (freshmen) Tess Wojtalik and Izzie Carrillo will lead the team in singles.”

Women’s track and field

Season highlights: Reese Sanders is ranked first in the state in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, with Alexis Parchman ranked second in the long jump and eighth in the 200 meters. The 4 x 400 relay team has run a season best of 4.08.9

Upcoming key meets: April 27 Pendleton Heights Invite at 5 and April 29 Golden Bear Invite at 5 at Shelbyville.
