The varsity football team prepares to take the field earlier this season against Center Grove.

For the second straight year, Head Coach Mr. Tim Herrin’s Terre Haute South football team will face the Fighting Irish in the Class 5A Sectional. Last year, his team lost in the tournament 38-14.

The coach responded to a reporter’s email and provided his perspective on the game, which will kick off at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30.

How do you feel your team matches up against Cathedral?

“I like how our skill guys match up against Cathedral, but we will need our offensive and defensive lines to step up to give us a chance.”

How have you prepared your team this week to play the Irish?

“We have focused on our play and reminding them of the challenge in front of them. We talk about the great opportunity to play a talented team and we see where we are as a team.”

Do you feel there is an advantage in your team hosting the game, rather than having to travel, and if so, what is that advantage?

“The only advantage is not having to get on a bus and travel for an hour and a half, and then get ready to play a game.”

Any concerns on your team about injuries or Covid going into the game?

“No major injuries at this time.”

Cathedral is severely limiting the number of students who are allowed to attend. For example, the cheerleaders are not attending. Are there limitations for South Vigo students?

“We have just limited total ticket sales and our cheerleaders have only done home games this year.”

In your scouting of Cathedral, how does your defense stop Nathan McCahill and Jake Langdon? Other Cathedral players that give you concern?

“It is not trying to stop them but limit their big plays and force them to line up over and over. They are talented players, and if you focus on them, you will get beat by others on the team.”

Does playing the Cathedral last year in the Sectional provide an advantage this year, and if so, why?

“The only advantage is our guys have seen them and know what we will need to do in order to have a chance to be successful.”
