Face Off: Don’t adjust your schedule for back to school

Definitely wait until the night before the first full day of school to go to bed at a decent time. 

Summer is coming to an end and the opportunity to stay up all night watching Youtube videos or playing video games becomes limited. If you are feeling particularly brave, you can still do those things during the school year, but it’s not advised when you have class at 8 in the morning. 

It’s much better to take advantage of the seemingly endless summer nights we have left to do whatever we please with minimal consequences the next day, rather than waste our precious free time to prepare our sleep schedule. As an added bonus, it’s exciting to try to go to bed somewhat early the night before school starts. Why not start off the school year with a challenge? It’s even better to learn how to function with limited hours of sleep, especially as a high school student. It helps prepare you for staying up late finishing that AP Government project or writing an English paper, all while having zero period at 6 in the morning and track practice after school. 

As the saying goes, “expect the unexpected”: you may never know when you need to pull an all-nighter. Training your body to go to bed late and wake up early can be beneficial as an active student so your internal alarm clock goes off when your real one is mysteriously silent (or you forgot to turn it on).

You should have enjoyed your last stress-free week before school starts by staying up late, reading an entire book, binging a new series and sleeping in as long as your parents will allow. You will have the rest of the school year to get adjusted to your sleep schedule, so make the most of the time you have left.
