Mr. Eric Saunders ’01 addresses the student body at the Feb. 12 Black History Month assembly.

The annual Black History Month assembly on Feb. 12 in the Welch Activity Center celebrated culture and accomplishments. The event incorporated the theme of “Black Girl Magic, Black Boy Joy” throughout the convocation, which lasted a little more than hour.

Mr. Eric Saunders ’01 served as the guest speaker, challenging students and telling about his experiences at Cathedral and as a student at Indiana University. He noted the school’s positive role in scheduling basketball games with Crispus Attucks, a high school with an all-black enrollment that had won the State title in the 1950s.

Saunders also thanked several teachers, coaches and administrators by name for their positive influence on his life.

The assembly ended, as is tradition, with the Irish blessing by the entire student body, faculty and staff.

The school operated on a Day 5 Mass schedule so that the assembly could take place before lunch.
