RIP flunch: Schedule to change with new quarter

Lunch, flex once once again will be separate

Flunchers take advantage of the warm weather on Oct. 2.

The new quarter that begins on Oct. 7 also will bring a change to the daily schedule that affects flex and lunch on days 2 and 5.

The schedule in effect during the first grading period resulted a period of the day for students to have an extended flexible learning time during their lunch period on days 2 and 5, which was commonly known as flunch. However, recent findings suggest that this form of schedule was not functional for all grades. Some teachers and students voiced concerns for the Freshman Class in particular.

Because it is mandatory for all freshmen to be in a supervised classroom during flex periods,  they would leave the cafeteria to find a classroom. However, many of the freshmen would find they had no place t0 go. According to science teacher Dr. Aarti Brooks, a member of the Student Innovation Team, many of the classrooms were closed due to so many teachers who had supervising duties all over the school, and in the classrooms that were open, upperclassmen took over a majority of the space.

Therefore, the administration’s hope for the new schedule is not “taking anything away from the students,” Brooks said, but rather “providing an opportunity for all our students to have a place to go.”

Likewise the administration noted other concerns with flunch, including the complaints of many students who said that they were not able to stay focused for the entire 75-minute period, and a variety of safety concerns. “Seventy-five minutes is just a long time without a specific locations students must be,” Brooks said.

While there was some debate on when these schedule changes should be made, results from a survey sent out to the faculty in which concluded that 92% of those who took the survey — a little more than half the staff —  wanted to see a schedule adjustment and encouraged the administration to revise the schedule and it immediately. Brooks said, “When you see data like that and hear some of the kids talking, it’s hard to wait.”

These changes will take place on Oct. 7, the first day of the second quarter.
