Several student journalists, as well as the Megaphone newspaper and Cathedran yearbook, have been honored by the Indiana High School Press Association.

In individual competition based on work published in the student newspaper during the second semester of the previous school year and the first nine weeks of this school year, individual awards went to:

Emma Flohr ’16, first place, infographics;

Junior Jenna Williams, first place, column writing;

Erin Collins ’16 and Amanda Keilman ’16, second place, news writing;

Flohr, second place, sports photo;

Flohr, second place, photo portfolio;

Keilman, second place, sports writing;

Megaphone staff, second place, story/photo package;

Jenna Williams, third place, feature writing;

Flohr and Kara Williams ’16, third place, page design;

Flohr, third place, spot news photo;

Brooke Sim ’16, third place, editorial cartooning.

Out-of-state judges, most of whom are high school journalism teachers or college journalism professors, evaluate individual work as well as yearbooks and newspapers. Cathedral enters its publications in Division II, which is composed of high schools with enrollment between 1,001 and 2,000.

After two rounds of judging, the state’s best publications are named Hoosier Star winners. Munster won the top spot for high school newspapers, with Cathedral and Floyd Central earning honorable mention status.

In the Hoosier Star Division II yearbook competition, Munster also was named the overall winner, with yearbooks from Cathedral, Plainfield and Richmond recognized with honorable mention awards.
