Spring sports update: Women’s track and field
The State tournament for the women’s track and field team approaches and the squad will compete in the North Central Sectional on May 14 at 5:30 p.m. According to the IHSAA website, the first, second and third place Sectional winners in all individual events and relays will advance to the Regional.
Head Coach Mr. Mark Doctor said the focus in practice will shift from “emphasis on conditioning and learning technique and focus more on perfecting technique and being rested and healthy for competition.”
Doctor also said he and the other coaches are looking toward the seniors to be leaders. He said that almost all of the members have been at this point before and know “what needs to be done,” he said.
The team is not lacking in talent, as there are several women ranked in the State in their events and will be able to score points for the team throughout the tournament. As for a weakness, Doctor said this year’s small roster makes it difficult to score the number of points needed to finish at the up of the team standings.
Regarding competing against teams during the regular season that it will face in the Sectional, Doctor said that such competition “gives us an idea of how we stack up against them, and what adjustments we need to make to be as successful as possible. North Central and Brebeuf (Jesuit) are probably the top teams in our Sectional this year. We have faced just about all of the other Sectional teams at some point during the season.”
Overall, the women are focusing on turning in their best performances at the end of the season. Doctor said, “It is important to finish the season on a strong note so that we can carry that positive energy into next year.”
