Teacher offers advice to first-time voters
Primary election is May 7; polls open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Voters who cast their ballots in the May 7 primary will leave their precinct with their “I Voted” sticker.
Seniors voting for the first time in the primary election on May 7 should be aware of the procedures for casting their vote.
AP Government and Economics teacher Mrs. Jill Twilleager said registration to vote is already past due. However, whether students have registered or not, Twilleager said citizens should be educated on their candidates.
To do so, Twilleager directs voters and students to indianavoters.in.gov.
This website allows users to:
- Register to vote
- Find their voting locations
- Find the candidates within their city, state or federal district
Twilleager said the most important step a citizen can take is simple: “register to vote.”
If you’re voting for the first time on May 7, the polls are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Voters must also show a current government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or a passport. The purpose of the primary is for the two political parties, the Democrats and the Republicans, to nominate candidates for the November general election. Therefore, primary election voters must declare if they want a Republican ballot or a Democratic ballot on May 7. They do not do so for the general election in November.
