Spring sports updates
Softball
The softball team has had a successful start to the season with a record of 9-1. Varsity Assistant Coach Mrs. Linda Bamrick said major accomplishments include a 9-1 victory over Brownsburg, a team the Irish had not beaten for several years. The varsity also pounded Carmel 15-3. Bamrick noted that the team is ranked sixth in Class 4A and has outscored its opponents 123-29.
The focus, according to the coach, is to improve the short game both offensively and defensively, continue to have the pitchers throw a high percentage of first pitch strikes, sharpen the defense and outhit the opponents. “We have shown a great deal of resilience in dealing with injuries and illnesses and bouncing back from defensive error,” said Bamrick. “We try to use every day as an opportunity to improve.”
City tournament quarterfinals will be played on April 27. The City semifinals are scheduled for May 3 and City finals on May 4th. All City tournament games will be played at Brookside Park.
Bamrick said the team has some quality opponents on the schedule that are ranked in the top 15 that the Irish will play between now and the second week of May. The team is also looking to defend its 2018 City title. “We play a very competitive schedule to prepare us for the road to state. We hope to advance further in the State tournament than any other Cathedral softball team,” said Bamrick.

Women’s track
According to Head Coach Mr. Mark Doctor, the women’s track season has gone “pretty well. While we are hurting for depth, the athletes we do have have turned in some great marks, including a couple of school records (4 x 100 meter and 4 x 200-meter relays). We have only had one dual meet so far. We currently sit at 0-1 after losing a close meet with Brebeuf.”
Two major accomplishments thus far include two school records in two relays.
The focus of the season right now is getting in quality training. “We will shift focus more on competition over the next couple of weeks,” Doctor said,.
The City meet will be May 6 at Arsenal Tech. Doctor said that in preparation for the run, the team is primarily focusing on basic factors such as conditioning and technique, “effectively training through some of our early season meets in order to be ready for the City and State tournaments,” the coach said.
A big meet that is coming up for the women is the Pike Invitational on May 3. Doctor said that this meet gives the team a good look at a lot of the Sectional and Regional competition.
Men’s volleyball
After a 13-7 start to the season, the Irish men’s volleyball team is well on its way of strong development and brotherhood, according to Head Coach Ms. Rhonda Low. “Our teamwork continues to develop. We are in a great position for this time of the season,” said Low.
The April 17 game against Roncalli was CYO Night during which the men honored the youth of boys’ volleyball during the freshman, JV and varsity matches. “We also are honoring our parents for their support, love and work they give to each player,” Low said.
Coming up for the men is the Metro tournament on April 30 and May 2. According to Low, It is a stepping block to the post season tournament. Post season play begins May 11 with the State tournament May 17 and 18.
The team is led by seniors Blake Kaufman and Allen Langdon.
Men’s golf
According to Head Coach Mr. Patrick Fagan, the current season is going well because the team has played in two matches and won both as of April 12. The team is being rebuilt after losing two top players from last season.

The City championship will be played on May 2 and the team hopes to defend its title.
Fagan commented on the age of the squad. “This is a really young team that is being led in a very positive manner by our three seniors, Matt Bigelow, Jimmy Grund and Luke Mattingly. They take the time to show our younger players the way things need to be done if they are going to duplicate the success we have had in the past. We are lucky to have such great leaders.”
