Ms. Mary Ann White ’11 returns to her second year as head coach, but fourth year with  the program. She was JV Blue coach for one year, and then assistant on varsity for another. 

Her colleagues include Mr. Howard Fogel as varsity assistant and Mr. Dan Fischer as the varsity assistant and goalie coach. The JV blue team is coached by Ms. Audrey Najjar and Ms. Hannah Wishart coaches JV Gold.

The varsity team finished with a record of 17-4 last year, and major season accomplishments include winning all in-state regular season games. The team won multiple postseason games and made it to State championship game for the fourth year in a row but lost in the final game to Carmel. 

White says the three team leaders for varsity include senior goalie Abbey Vastag, who White describes as “one of the best goalies in the state and has been starting varsity for three years. She is a loud, clear voice on defense and has a high save percentage of 57 percent from last year and early this season.” 

Next she said University of Detroit Mercy commit Kate Schmidt, who is a senior midfielder, brings “a strong, talented player who keeps the intensity high on the field. She plays 110 percent and brings a high pressure defense and fast breaks.”

Finally, White said that senior midfielder Meg Walker is “a true team player by assisting teammates, causing turnovers and getting ground balls. She is calm when possessing the ball and works hard to cause turnovers and capitalize on them,” said White.

Although talent was lost with the past year’s graduating class, White says this year’s team is made up of a small but solid group of returners and a lot of new players – all athletes and hard workers. 

“While we lost talent, we are making up for it with a team that values hustle, heart and the desire to improve every day. The team competes with each other at practice and with each other at games and they drive each other’s work ethic to try harder, and in the end, their success,” said White.

White said that the goals are to constantly improve and to compete for a State title for the fifth year in a row.
