Due to their depth — the Irish qualified 10 wrestlers to the State Finals — as well as several outstanding performances on the meet’s second day, the wrestling team won the State title Feb. 17 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Fewer than 10 points separated the top three teams, but the Irish, under the direction of Head Coach Mr. Sean McGinley ’88, came away with the big trophy, scoring 108 points to State runner-up Brownsburg’s 100.5 and Columbus East’s 98.5.
The other teams rounding out the Top 10 were Portage, fourth place, 67.5 points; Perry Meridian, fifth, 64; Chesterton, sixth, 57; Yorktown, seventh, 50; Roncallli, eighth, 49; Avon, ninth, 40; and Jimtown, 10th, 35.
Jordan Jordan Slivka won the State title at 145 pounds. Wrestling for a State title and finishing runner-up were junior Alex Mosconi, 132; senior Zach Melloh, 138; and sophomore Elliot Rodgers, 152.
In a text on Feb. 18, McGinley wrote, “(It was) just a total team effort. Not only did Jordan Slivka knock off the Number 1, Number 2 and Number 4 ranked wrestlers in the state on his way to a State title, his win in the finals sealed the State title for the Irish.”
The coach noted that not only did 10 wrestlers qualify for the State Finals, seven were place winners, six competed in the semifinals and four in the finals.
