Junior Luke Adams is one of 13 Irish wrestlers who will compete in the Feb. 10 Semistate at New Castle.

Based on their performance at Feb. 3’s Regional at Pendleton Heights, 13 Irish wrestlers will compete at the New Castle Semistate on Feb. 10, with a spot in the following week’s State Finals on the line.

If they advance, seniors Andy Guhl (220) and Zach Melloh (138), juniors Alex Mosconi (132, who wrestled last year at Indian Creek), Jordan Slivka (145), Lukasz Walendzak (120) and sophomore Elliot Rodgers (152) will make a return visit to Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Other Semistate qualifiers wrestling at New Castle are seniors Tony Mosconi (160) and Jacob Obst (285), junior Luke Adams (195), sophomores Logan Bailey (106), Caleb Oliver (113) and Tyler Wagner (170) and freshman Andrew Wilson (126).

Head Coach Mr. Sean McGinley ’88 said, “If we wrestle well and to our potential, we have a chance to put out a very high number that would go right up in Cathedral’s history.”

Regarding how his team might fare at State, McGinley said, “After this weekend when we find out who qualifies for the State competition, we will have a better view for how we stand. But there are a handful of teams who have a shot, and we are definitely one of them.”

The wrestling State Finals are Feb. 16 and Feb. 17. The Irish wrestlers won the State title in 2014 and finished State runner-up the next year.
