Sports update: Cross-country qualifies for State

Football team to open Sectional against Roncalli

The men’s cross-country team will compete at the State Finals on Oct. 28 in Terre Haute.

Two teams and one individual continue fall competition over the weekend of Oct. 27-28.

Football: The team takes on Roncalli in the second round (the Irish drew a first-round bye) of the Class 5A Sectional on Oct. 27 at Arsenal Tech. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Athletics Director Mr. Doug Seagrave has announced that tickets for the Sectional game are available in the athletics office on Oct. 24, Oct. 25 and Oct. 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $6. Because this is a tournament game, student IDs and Cathedral passes are not valid.

Men’s cross-country: The Irish, under the direction of Head Coach Mr. Jim Nohl, finished second in the Semistate at Shelbyville, scoring 64 points and grabbing the runner-up spot, and will run as a a team at the State Finals. The boys’ meet is scheduled for Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. at the LaVern Gibson course (599 S. Tabortown Road) in Terre Haute. Based on his performances during the regular season as well as the Sectional and Regional, junior Cole Hocker is one of the favorites to capture the individual State title. Nohl noted that this is the team’s first appearance in the State Finals since 2012, when the Irish finished ninth.

Women’s cross-country: While the team did not qualify for the State Finals, sophomore Jillian Cridge will participate in the State Finals on Oct. 28, also at the LaVern Gibson course. The girls’ meet is set to begin at 1:45 p.m.
