Every Sept. 13 marks an important day. Dr. Thomas Greer, chief officer for student affairs, hands out ice cream sandwiches to passing students in the cafeteria, balloons and streamers decorate the outdoor lampposts, and a special Mass commemorates the important date. Ninety-nine years ago, Cathedral High School was born.

This school has much to boast about. But behind the numerous awards, titles and State championships, the central values and energy remain the same.

Senior Class president Anna Flood said she is proud of the school’s long held traditions of spirit and excellence, which have been thriving for nearly a century.

Freshman Class president Ellie Schnur wrote in an email, “It is so unbelievable to think of how far this school has come and the wonderful future for it ahead.”

“It’s cool to be here during this momentous milestone,” Sophomore Class president Will Kennedy said. He said that his Sophomore Class is especially honored to be the school’s 100th graduating class. “It’s kind of special,” he said.

The class presidents said they encouraged students to feel excited about their school’s birthday.

“I would like to tell the Freshman Class to celebrate and be thankful,” Schnur said. She said birthday celebrations are always enjoyable. “I believe that everyone will be in good spirits and joyful on the special day,” she said.

Kennedy said he hopes sophomores recognize the importance of this day.

Junior Class president Michael McNulty did not respond to a request for comment.

Flood said she is disappointed she and the seniors will not be at this school next year to celebrate the centennial, but she said every day is a good one here, whether it is a birthday or not.

Flood said, “Cathedral truly is a special place.”
