May 17, the Wednesday of senior final week, marks the annual painting of the senior wall.

The senior wall, located by the softball field, is divided into three sections. Every year, a different section is painted over so that each design is displayed for three years.

The paintings are chosen based upon the class theme, Mrs. Katie Lewis, theology teacher and senior class moderator, said. As the senior class moderator, Lewis assists with the painting and also oversees the project.

Before the painting begins, seniors are provided with a lunch consisting of pizza, cookies and water. However, the food is not the only aspect of the day that excites the seniors.

Senior Emily Getz looks forward to painting the wall. “It’s exciting to be together one last time and physically leave a mark on Cathedral.” she said. The event is “the last time we really get to be together before graduation,” she said.

Lewis said she likes “seeing how the senior class officers decide what the theme is of the wall (and) the creativity of all of it.”

So far, Lewis’s favorite wall design is the storm painted by the class of 2014.

The tradition has remained untouched for as long as Lewis can remember, Lewis said. The school has celebrated the event “for as long as I’ve been here. I’ve been here for nine years,” she said. “It’s just a great tradition,” Lewis said.

From decorating the Hill with toilet paper to painting a mural onto the wall, senior year is marked with traditions.

Of next Wednesday Getz said, “It’s our last hurrah.”
