There’s a target on the back of the defending State champion women’s tennis this spring. It’s been 30 years since a women’s team here found itself in the position of attempting to repeat a State title.

Last season’s championship victory over South Bend St. Joseph was an outcome of what Head Coach Mr. Mark Noe referred to as a  “wise use of time”  during and after practice, and Noe is hopeful that wise use of time continues this season.  

The chemistry of the team has changed with former players such as Grace Koscielski ‘16 graduating, resulting in the three sisters are no longer playing together. Last year the sisters all went undefeated through the tournament Grace was 22-0, sophomore ClaireKoscielski was 23-0 and junior Maeve Koscielski finished the season 27-0.  The three dominated the tournament last year, but this year Noe said, “So many girls came prepared this year and pre- and post season dynamics have changed with a more competitive group.”

Maeve and Clare are expected experience another successful year, but the coaches are reminding them not to try and repeat the previous year before but play their best and have their goals in mind.

Being the first women’s tennis State champs in 30 years comes with high expectations, as the team is coming back this year with nothing in mind but another trophy. Noe said this team can win championships not only due to its great work ethic but its efficient use of time during practices. Referring to the members of his team, Noe said, “I will honor your time, as long as you work hard and get things done”

The team still may be refining old talent as it works hard to win another State title, but Noe said, “Numerous incoming talented freshmen (are on the team), one of the most talented groups I’ve seen in awhile.” The upperclassmen have their hands full trying to maintain their positions. The young talent is vying for the spots and competition, pushing the whole program forward.

With seniors from last year including Grace and Meghan Farrell ‘16 gone, the varsity spots for Number-1 doubles went to two freshmen, Bella Montefalco and Cole Spau.

The program expects to see many changes as the underclassmen bring in new talent, older players refine their skills and the coaches prepare to lead this team to another championship. With the season off to a successful start — the team is ranked Number 1 in the most recent state poll — Noe’s squad prepares to compete in tomorrow’s Crawfordsville Invitational.

Maeve Koscielski said, “We hope to keep improving as a team and working hard so we can win state again.
