This past Saturday, on October 18, the Lady Irish brought home a sectional title, with 2 victorious wins against Shortridge and Bishop Chatard High school. The Lady Irish play against the nationally ranked Roncalli Royals on Saturday, October 25 at 4:00 pm at Greenfield Central.
Thus far, the Lady Irish have had an overall successful season. Ranking 8th in Indiana, the Cathedral Girls Volleyball is 23 – 9. A big part of this has been due to illnesses and injuries.
Karrie Quenichet, Girls Volleyball Head Coach, said, “It was fun to see everything come together for sectionals. As we progressed early in the season we then experienced a couple of injuries in key places and we also began to have the flu run through our group, one at a time. Our team has rallied around those adversities and all of our players have stepped up in their roles”.
Regardless of the tough situation the Lady Irish have been put in, the team has certainly demonstrated excellence and perseverance throughout the 2025-2026 season. Mia Stubbs, class of ‘26, had been dealing with shin splints and stepping in to help was freshman setter, Alaina Sloan ‘29. The Lady Irish have been versatile in both offensive and defensive aspects.
“We are a team with so much offensive firepower but we jokingly say that we must become a team that loves defense and; therefore, a team that looks at offense as the reward for good defense,” said Quenichet.
With all the team’s efforts, the player’s hard work and determination paved the way for the Sectional title. Quenichet said, “As a coach, it brings relief. You want things so badly for your team and you know more than anyone how hard they work and what they sacrifice to be where they are.”
This is most certainly true, especially for the Lady Irish, seeing as there have been various injuries within the team and the longevity of the season so far. Finding a balance between maintaining good performances in both school and athletics is certainly difficult, but the Lady Irish do an amazing job. As the Lady Irish head to play against the Roncalli Royals on Saturday in the Regional game, the Cathedral community wishes the girls the best of luck and many prayers!
