At Cathedral, Homecoming week is full of excitement and festivities, but this year there is a new, exciting change, a semiformal dance! On Saturday September 20th Cathedral will be hosting a semi-formal dance for all students to kick off homecoming week.
For many students homecoming is a big deal, many see it as a defining point in their year. While Cathedral has not had the most exciting homecoming dance in the past, the week of homecoming is something so many look forward to.
Whether it is the big football game, homecoming court, the hallway decorations, or dress up days all students see homecoming as an opportunity to have fun with their class and come together to celebrate the school year. The one thing that is truly lacking has been the dance.
Junior Grace Zuerner explained that “The homecoming wasn’t formal and the point of the dance is to dress up and have fun with friends. You see other people dressing up for homecoming from other schools and just feel like you’re missing out. I believe that adding this new homecoming dance will benefit our school culture and spirit as well as better students’ experience when they come to our school.”
In years past Cathedral has not hosted a “traditional” homecoming dance, it has been a hot topic on the hill as many students felt they were missing out on the high school experience. Cathedral has previously hosted a “casual” dance that was held at the end of homecoming week and was not a huge draw for students. Most students just went to the “dance” in order to get spirit points and hopefully secure the spirit stick for their class. The dance was also held in the middle of the week on a Thursday, this conflicted with many students’ schedules and made them unable to attend.
This year, Cathedral has begun to move away from the casual dance and transitioned to a much more traditional homecoming experience. The dance will be held on the Saturday before homecoming week replicating other schools with the dance kicking off the week. The dance will also be on a weekend rather than a week day making it feel much more like a fun activity rather than a school event.
Overall homecoming has gotten a huge upgrade that will make a difference for many students in the future. So make sure to show up and show out!
Zuerner said “I think that this will make a huge difference in the school. I know that over the past two years I have been hoping for a change and I’m so excited that we are finally seeing what a real Cathedral homecoming looks like! This is a defining moment in the history of our school.”
