The first Mass of the school year brought something new to Cathedral’s Altar: three students debuting into services of liturgy. Andrea Aluaiza ‘26, Abigail Eldridge ‘27, and Tara Johnson ‘28 debuted as this year’s at the first All-School Mass as altar servers, guided by Father Geoff and Father Jomy. Their service marks the start of a year full of traditions, leadership, and faith.
For these students serving at the altar is more than just a duty—it’s a calling. Whether they are holding candles, assisting the priest, or preparing the gifts, each role offers a deeper connection to faith and a new sense of responsibility. Though newcomers, each server brings a unique perspective and energy to the tradition. As this trio of empowering young girls explain their decisions to become a server came from a personal desire to grow closer to God.
“My want to become closer with God through the church, and so I can learn every piece of the Mass, is what really called me to be a server,” Eldridge said when asked what called her to be a server.

Eldrigde, who describes herself as new but learning through every Mass, has found peace in understanding the process of the liturgy. She admits that the most challenging part of this role has been learning to not speak, which the majority of students struggle with during Mass. Although Eldridge embraces the opportunity of this role as a way to serve something greater than herself. She shares that her favorite duty so far has been holding the candle during the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Aluaiza shares a similar sense of devotion, but also emphasizes the privilege that comes with the role. “It is a privilege to serve our Creator and Savior,” she said. For her, the training process was welcoming and peaceful, made easier by the support of the Mass service community. Aluaiza does admit that she was a bit worried for her debut, but once Mass began, she felt a sense of calmness and joy.
“Focus on spending time with Jesus and opening your heart to Him, and he will do the rest,” Aluaiza advises her peers who are on their own faith journeys.
Though she has only recently started serving, Aluaiza already recognizes how the role has strengthened her confidence. By serving God publicly, she feels more motivated to express her faith in daily life—noting that the opportunity is teaching her both humility and leadership.
Johnson also joined the team of altar servers this year. Her debut marked the start of a year of faith with reverence as the youngest. Her involvement highlights not only her dedication but also the energy that new voices bring to a long-standing tradition. Johnson’s presence alongside Eldridge and Aluaiza at the first Mass marks an important step into the Cathedral tradition.
Together, the three girls represent a new wave of leadership, faith, and service within the school’s religious community. Whether they are lighting candles, carrying the cross, or assisting at the altar, each moment brings them closer to their faith and strengthens as they embody excellence.
“Just trust in God,” Elridge said. “Not everyone will support you, but just knowing beyond the hardships is a great reward and satisfaction.”
