Spring Sports Preview: Softball
Head Coach Mr. Tony Matthews and his staff opened their season Tuesday night, beating Shelbyville 8-1. The team plans to build off of last year’s success this season. Although the team’s 2016 record was 18-15, the team started to play better towards the end of the season.
The team won both the City and Sectional championship for the second time in three years. It continued defeating Pendleton Heights 2-1 to win its first Regional title since 2003.
According to Assistant Coach Mrs. Linda Bamrick, the team’s biggest win last year was defeating the defending State champions, Center Grove, on a walk off homerun by junior Brittany Ford. Ford had another home run Tuesday night.
According to Bamrick, key returning players this year are seniors Brooke Broecker, Olivia Jackson, junior Jordan Lyman and sophomore Lily Jennings, along with Ford.
The girls play the Cardinals Tuesday night at Southport High school at 6 p.m.
