The Lady Irish softball team kicked off their season on March 24th, against Terre Haute South. Up to this point, towards the end of May, they have had an amazing season. As of May 19th, the team is currently 23-0.
Since the fall semester of 2024, the Lady Irish have been working hard on the field and in the gym to prepare themselves physically for the start of the softball season. And it seems like every individual’s hard work has paid off so far.
Spending hours together outside of school has certainly added to the team’s spirit. Senior Lauren Wright said, “Our team has only grown closer as the season has progressed.” Wright, who has been playing for the Lady Irish softball team since freshman year, has loved watching the team grow both as a team and in friendships.
In the city game versus Bishop Chatard, Wright said, “Our pitchers threw a really good game with 12 strikeouts, and our defense did a good job of backing up the pitchers and keeping runners off the bases.” As the season progresses, it is particularly visible on the field that players have evolved into the amazing and well-supported team they are.
Wright also said, “Our team’s well spent time together has contributed to the strong energy and the fun environment of our team.” This environment has certainly carried out into the playing field. The lady Irish softball team carries this energy onto the field knowing, as Senior Maddie Liter said, “Mentally we had to get in the mindset of knowing that we had a big target on our backs given our record, and especially with this being a rivalry game.”
With amazing teamwork and powerful determination, the Lady Irish softball team beat Bishop Chatard at the City game. One player, sophomore Shelby Johnson, said, “Winning the city championship with this team was by far the best experience ever. We’ve laughed, worked our butts off, and probably eaten too much team meal together.”
For this season, the Lady Irish has certainly had tons of highs with no lows. Johnson said, “Being able to beat our rivals in the city game, let’s just say it felt amazing.”
The team has two more games remaining in the regular season and hope to cap off an undefeated 25-0 season before heading into sectionals.
