The boys Irish golf team kicked off their season last week with a top 5 finish at the Yorktown Invite in a competitive field. The Irish fired a 313 as a team beating the score they shot at the same course for regionals last season. Going into the rest of the season the Irish are looking to make it back to state for the second season in a row.
Cathedral boys golf is entering its second season under Head Coach Jim Grossi and is returning many pieces from last year’s team that advanced all the way to state. With a young team, there is a lot of promise for the future. Coach Grossi said, “I am very pleased with how this season has begun. At the conclusion of tryouts, I told everyone that I thought this team (both Varsity and JV) is a special group. I am most impressed with the natural team chemistry, and the support each teammate displays for one another.”
One of those returning pieces from last year’s team is Class of 2026 member Johnny Leaman. Last year, he had a breakout season for the Irish and is looking forward to helping out the team more this year. Leaman said, “The season has gone decent so far. Personally I am working on getting back in the groove of things, especially after a long winter. As a team, this team can compete and we are deep. I do not believe we have shown our best yet, but when we do, keep an eye out for the Irish”
The first event of the season went well where they were led by Class of 2026 Ben Kauffman with a 73 followed by other Class of 2026 Johnny Leaman with a 78. Kauffman finished tied for 3rd in the event,
Coach Grossi was very happy with the first tournament of the season and the progress the Irish have made. Grossi said, “After our first invitational, the potential I felt for this team from day one was solidified. This team has the individual talent and potential to compete with any team in the State.”
The Boys will head to Fox Prairie this weekend looking for another good showing at the Bob Spacey Invitational. The Irish are looking to keep momentum building before entering the postseason in just over a month. Leaman has high goals for Cathedral saying “Another goal of mine is for me to lead this team to another State appearance and to put us on the map. I think making it to state this year would get people to fully respect our team and program.”
