The program has enjoyed high success the last few seasons and the Irish baseball team looks to continue that this spring. The Irish started their run for a trip to Victory Field and the state championship last week while the school was officially on spring break. They had an amazing trip going 4-0 and winning those games by a combined score of 39 to 8.
Head Baseball Coach Ed Freije 99’ and his team had a great season last year going 16-12 against a tough schedule and making it to the Regional Championship. The Irish are looking to build of last seasons success and take another leap this season.
Coach Freije has high expectations for the 2025 season and said, “Expectations for the upcoming season are to continue to grow and develop throughout the season to be playing our best baseball as we go into the City and Post Season Tournament. Our goals and expectations year end and year out are to compete at a high level throughout the season against a very solid schedule and then compete for a City Championship, Sectional Championship, and a State Championship run.”
The Irish are returning many players from last year’s varsity team while also bringing in some new key players that have been developing in the program. Freije is looking forward to relying on the experience of some of his players that have played at the highest level for him. “We’ll look for leadership and increased production from returning starters Ethan Dorsey ’25, Eli Bennett ’25, Bo Cooper ’25, Eli Sinsabaugh ’26, Chase Nickols ’26, Landon Hughes ’26, and Connor Christiansen ’27. Thomas Mariani ’25 and Junior Belford ’25 also return with significant varsity experience. We’ll also look to a number of others to step into larger roles and contribute at a high level this season!”
One of those players looking to take a step up this year for the team is Class of 2026 Michael Gallagher. Gallagher is excited for the opportunities he will be presented this year and said, “I am looking forward to being with all of the guys throughout the year and enjoying all of the time with everyone.”
After spending the last couple of seasons in 4A, Cathedral will be competing in 3A this season and looks to be highly competitive in their new class. The IndyStar had the Irish ranked 10th in their preseason 3A rankings. Freije said, “Regardless of the class that we are in, we are going to play a strong schedule and play against some of the best competition in the state. 3A is strong and has teams with very good players and traditions of winning at a high level.”
Now that students are back on campus, They will be able to watch the Irish all season at Brunette Park for home games as Cathedral makes it push for a state championship. The high expectations and culture of winning for this season is all throughout the program and its players. Gallagher added, “My goal is to be successful as a team and win a state title”
Cathedral plays at Brebeuf on Wednesday and host Franklin Central for their home opening on April 9th.
