Junior Amia Funches is not just a student but a dedicated director managing the fast-paced world of high school theater. Between show choir, broadcasting, and a challenging academic schedule, she brings creativity and strong leadership to every production. Through her hard work, she ensures that each performance runs smoothly while balancing her many responsibilities.
For many students, high school is about finding a balance between academics and extracurricular activities. For Funches, it is about preparing for her future. As a student director and show choir manager, she is learning how to lead and create productions. Working closely with her theater teacher, Mrs. Jordan Fox, she is gaining experience in directing and presenting plays.
“I started doing theater because I want to be a film director in the future. And working with Mrs. Fox has helped me see what it’s like to direct and present plays,” Funches said. “I started managing show choir because I also want to own a filming production company, and I’m learning a lot of management skills working with the choirs. I also love the people.”
With so many responsibilities, time management is crucial. Between rehearsals, homework, and extracurricular activities, Amia Funches often stays at school until 8 p.m. To keep up with everything, she has had to break her habit of procrastination, finishing assignments in class or even during lunch.

“Sometimes doing all this becomes hard and bushy, but I keep reminding myself that what I’m learning now will be very useful in the future no matter what career I go into,” she explained.
Despite the challenges, her passion for theater and show choir makes it all worth it. Her favorite part is working with people who share her interests, and she considers the group like a second family. Though balancing school and extracurricular is difficult, she has learned to manage her time better.
In her rare free moments, she enjoys watching movies or catching up on sleep.
Amia Funches continues to work hard, currently directing Oz Rookie Showcase while also managing show choir at competitions. Her dedication to Cathedral Choir, theater, and broadcasting does not go unnoticed as she balances these commitments, she remains guided by faith.
“Even if you can’t see it yet, God has a plan for you, and He’ll stay by your side as He guides you down that path,” Funches said.
