The biggest game of the Cathedral football 2024 season is a huge Sectional Championship matchup against 10-0 Lawrence North. A game between Cathedral and Lawrence North will almost certainly be the game of the week in the state of Indiana. The game will kickoff at 7 pm with Lawrence North hosting.
Cathedral has held their own this season having a 6-3 record and beating many top teams. Lawrence North will be arguably the toughest test of the season, though. LN beat 3 top 10 teams and was never really tested throughout the season.
Cathedral will have to focus on the Lawrence North offense who has been a buzzsaw in 6A this year. Averaging almost 40 points a game and scoring at least 24 points every game, the Wildcats have maybe the best offense in the state. History might be on Cathedral’s side as they’ve beaten LN the last 2 years in the sectional championship.
Cathedral looked great last week in the tournament opener against North Central, dominating 36-0. The defense all season has been very good allowing the offense to free up and play well. This week the Irish will also have senior running back Jalen Bonds back who was out for most of the regular season with an ankle injury.
Cathedral against top ranked teams this season has been great, beating defending champions Ben Davis and Center Grove and losing in tight games to Warren Central and Brownsburg.
Head Coach Bill Peebles ‘88 said, “We’ve played 2 number one teams this season and went 1-1. We played a really strong Cincinnati team where it went down to the final play and we didn’t get it done. We went down to the wire with a really good Center Grove team and got that done and then we played Warren Central who probably has one of the best defenses in the country. We know playing that type of schedule is going to prepare us for whoever we play in the postseason bracket.”
Advancing to the regional for the 6A tournament for the 3rd year in a row would be an incredible accomplishment for Cathedral being the smallest school in the class.
Cathedral will certainly be tested this Friday to win the sectional championship but the team is confident. Coach Peebles said, “Our goal is to play to the best of our ability every week, and if we play to the best of our ability every week we believe we can win every week.”
