Wade Knapp – Thansgiving
Halloween vs Thanksgiving, a battle of the two main holidays of late fall, an argument had at dinner tables across the nation…today I am here to settle said argument.
Thanksgiving is the better holiday because of the copious amounts of perks that come with it. Between an assortment of delicious stomach-filling dishes, lifelong family traditions, and nonstop football to be watched all day, Thanksgiving brings a full day’s worth of excitement and fun with your family and closest friends.
People may argue Halloween is better for the fun of dressing up with your friends and spending a night going out to collect candy from stranger’s front porches, but in reality, you usually spend a night walking around in the cold, freezing your butt off for a handful of candy, half of which may be candy you dislike.
Now picture this. It is late afternoon on Thanksgiving, football is on the TV and you can smell the mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, and turkey cooking from across the house. It is warm inside and you are catching up with all of your favorite family members. Then it’s dinner time and you can make the perfect plate of your choosing and eat that delicious, homemade food that you usually only get once or twice a year.
Which sounds more appealing to you?
To Senior Bennett Dobrota, Thanksgiving sounds more appealing because “The food is way better and I really enjoy getting to spend time with my family.”
Lastly, I would like to point out that Thanksgiving has something for everybody. If you like football, it’s on all day. If you like to cook, there’s plenty of food to be made. If you like to help the community, especially those in need, there are a surplus of community service opportunities around the United States that are aimed to help those who are in need feel loved and have a good Thanksgiving as well.
Thanksgiving is about celebrating family, being appreciative of what we have, and living out the Cathedral Core Value of Option for the Poor by helping those who are less fortunate, ensuring that they feel loved on a day full of gratitude.
In the end, if you choose Thanksgiving, you are choosing a delicious home-cooked meal over working hard for a $4.99 bag of mediocre candy.
Mary Murphy – Halloween
As the days continue to get shorter and the leaves start to change colors, there’s an undeniable excitement in the fall air. As October comes around, the holidays start to get mentioned, but let’s be real: Halloween is the star of the show.
Halloween is the ultimate canvas for your imagination. Whether you spontaneously make a DIY costume or transform your driveway into a scream park, Halloween forces everyone to get creative. Doing your makeup, making costumes, and decorating your house is just a perfect opportunity to express yourself. Plus, who doesn’t love a good pumpkin carving competition?
Halloweeen is important to communities and neighborhoods. It is the one night a year where kids (along with some adults) fill the streets as they ring doorbells all dressed up. They collect candy like it’s a competition with a gold medal waiting for them at the end. From trick or treating to haunted houses, Halloween brings communities together more than any other holiday can.
Let’s talk about candy. Halloween is all kids and candy loving peoples dreams! From the classic favorites like Kit Kats and Skittles to the more controversial sweets candy corn, this holiday is FULL of straight sugar. We can’t forget about going home after trick or treating and trading candy with your friends.
Halloween is full of thrills and scares. Haunted Houses, Scream Parks, and horror movie marathons let everyone face their fears in a debatably fun way. There’s just something thrilling about being intentionally scared by either a character at a park or on the TV.
In the lineup of fall holidays, Halloween stands out the most. Full of creativity, community, sugary treats, and a touch of fear makes Halloween an unbeatable holiday. As Halloween approaches and fall continues, get ready to embrace the spooky magic of Halloween. Stock up on candy, grab a costume, and be ready for a night full of sugar highs and frights.
