The Irish Boys Tennis season is in full swing. Cathedral Tennis has performed great this season going up against many ranked teams and beating them while also being ranked themselves. The Irish will have high expectations this postseason both for their individuals and the team.
Assistant tennis coach Mr. Cole Hepp is thrilled with the season so far saying, “I think it’s been a great season so far, we have a great group of guys with strong senior leaders. While we play one of the more competitive schedules in the Indianapolis area, we’ve had some really competitive matches, we’ve had some really good wins this season.”
The Irish Netters certainly have one of the harder schedules, this past week alone they played 2 ranked teams in Guerin Catholic and Noblesville. While they ultimately lost those matches, Cathedral was very competitive in both showing promise for what’s ahead.
Cathedral also added a good win this week against sectional and city rival the North Central Panthers.
The boys will continue to be tested as they face Fishers and Hamilton SouthEastern as the regular season wraps up, before starting the city tournament on Thursday. Cathedral will have a great chance to add another city tournament to its history this season.
Coach Hepp said about the expectations for city, “We’re playing some really good tennis right now with our singles and our doubles teams. Our hope is that we’ll win city this year, we’ll put our hopes and expectations there and that’s what we’ll fight for.”
Cathedral, ranked 13th in the state, is having a very accomplished season, one that its players are proud of. Junior and varsity singles tennis player Chris Wojtalik is thrilled with the season. “I think we’re definitely growing as a team with each match and practice. We’re the most bonded we’ve ever been in my 3 years on the team. We’ve got a great attitude going into matches and the goals of this team are great,” he said.
As the regular season comes to a close the Irish turn their attention to the state tournament. Coach Hepp is looking forward to what’s to come. “We’re really hoping for a sectional win this year, and going into regionals we’ll see a couple of our bigger battles against North Central and Chatard, which we’re excited for.”
