All students will once again have the opportunity to seek help with their writing assignments in the Writing Center as it reopens tomorrow following a three year hiatus. The center is located in the back right of the Library in the enclosed glass rooms. English teacher Ms. Irene Wilson said, “For every period of the day, there will be a teacher and one or two peer editors to help you with editing, revising (and) brainstorming—basically any stage of the writing process.”
The Writing Center closed in 2021 due to troubles with the pandemic and the departure of its former head. Since then, Wilson explained, “We just haven’t had the people who are willing to take charge until now. We also, as an English Department, are trying to rework our writing curriculum, so it’s more consistent across all four years. (The Writing Center) was a piece of that movement.”
Along with an educator, there will also be one to two student peer editors ready to help in the Writing Center. These students are juniors and seniors, and they were identified as skilled writers by their teachers. Senior Anne Crabtree, a peer editor at the Writing Center, said, “I’m looking forward to helping people with their writing, and I hope people use this service because it’s a great way to get help.”
Students seeking help at the Writing Center can make an appointment on the website, and they are asked to bring a printed copy of their written work and the directions or rubric for the assignment. Wilson also said, “You need to get a pass from your resource teacher or a pass from the Writing Center itself. It kind of functions like the Math Resource.”
Wilson closed by saying, “It’s always helpful to have somebody else look at your writing, so I highly recommend the Writing Center to all.”
The Writing Center will have a grand reopening party Wednesday morning with snacks, prizes and more.
