Philanthropy is described as a desire to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donations of money to good causes. Money donations is a huge impact to Cathedral but so is time, which is what Cathedral students will be giving on Wednesday October 18.
At the beginning of the year, students were introduced to a yearly fundraiser to raise money for financial aid. Students were given the task to raise $250 total to earn out of uniform days, but also a day off of school. If students hit their goal they are able to get October 18 off, but that wasn’t the only way to give back. Those who didn’t hit their goal were asked to come in October 18 to help the school in a different way.
Science teacher Howie Fogel, coordinator of the Philanthropy day said, “We always try to find a way for students to give back to Cathedral and the whole point is to give students a chance to give back to the school. I hope students take away that there are different ways to give back because in this case they will be giving their time.”
Students will arrive on campus at 9am and will be released at 2pm, there will also be lunch provided. During the day students will work on painting murals on canvases to hang around the school for Christmas on the Hill. Christmas on the Hill will occur on December 8 when Cathedral will welcome kids from 1st-4th grade to participate in different activities throughout the day.
On October 18 students will be able to show their creativity and pride for the school to make something for the kids to feel welcomed on the Hill. This is the first year that Christmas on the Hill will take place so this is also the first year the murals will be painted. Mr. Forgel adds, “This year we’re creating murals that will be used for Christmas on the Hill, we’re really excited that students will be creating something that will be used for a new tradition as the students that come visit during Christmas on the Hill will see the backdrops and it will be their first impression of the school.”
As Cathedral is big on traditions, Mr. Forgel as well as the school hopes for students to enjoy the Philanthropy day but also create something that shows Cathedrals pride.
