The crochet club is in its inaugural year on the Hill, and many students are learning how to crochet for the first time. Crocheting is a craft in which one uses one hook to make loops with yarn—this differs from knitting which uses two hooks. Club Co-President Senior Zoey Johnston was pleasantly surprised by past meetings’ turnouts, and she said, “There’s actually like 15 people in the club. It’s kind of crazy because I did not think people would be interested in the crochet club, and they’re all very interested in learning how to crochet.”
The idea of the club originated from last year’s crocheting J-term class with Math teacher Mrs. Lisa Ford. Johnston explained, “During J-term, Mrs. Ford donated (the crocheted hats) to the hospital, so we plan on bringing (our hats) to the hospital for people doing cancer treatments,” she continued, “It’s kind of cool to see what you can do with your talents. Crochet used to be something that after J-term, I would just sit in my room and do, but being able to apply it and share it with others through this club has been really nice.” Currently, the club is working on “granny squares,” small squares to be combined into a larger club blanket, and hats for charity. “We started the club to make things for charity, but we also want people to be able to crochet whatever they want. So if you have a pattern or something in mind, you can literally do whatever you want,” Johnston said.
Anyone attending the club also does not have to worry about supplies because the club is using donated yarn and hooks. However, Johnston said that everyone is welcome to bring their own supplies. Additionally, anyone can join regardless of crocheting skills. Johnston herself is “semi-experienced,” but Ford and other club members can help teach newcomers.
Club meetings are on Fridays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Room 4344, and people can come and go as they please. “If you’ve never seen yarn before or you crochet every waking hour, it does not matter. You are more than welcome to come—even if you just want to chit-chat, it’s very social.”
